     Marrakech travel guides

Marrakech, former imperial city of western Morocco, and a major economic center with mosques, Palaces and gardens. The Medina is a fortified and densely populated medieval city dating from the Berber Empire, with alleys intertwined like a labyrinth, where the lively souks (markets) sell fabrics, pottery and traditional jewels. Symbol of the city, the minaret of the 12th century Koutoubia Moorish mosque can be seen for miles.

The food vendors border Jemaa el-Fna, a large place where storytellers and musicians can express themselves. The Marrakesh Museum, in an ancient palace, displays decorative objects, coins and contemporary works of art from Morocco. The Ben Youssef Madrasa is an Islamic monument ornamented with zellige and carved cedar. Other sites of interest include the Bahia Palace, with its ancient Great Harem, the monumental ruins of the 16th century El Badi Palace and the Saadian Tombs, Royal Mausoleum. Outside the old town are the modern district of New Town, and beautiful gardens such as those of Agdal, Majorelle Gardens and La Menara.
